Deciding to pursue a career in baseball, he made his professional debut on August 17th 1987, winning 20 games that year and posting an earned run average of 2.55. Additionally, he won his first National League Cy Young Award in 1991.
After retiring from the game, he served as special assistant to Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz for three seasons and has been a color commentator for the team since 2011. Additionally, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The former MLB player and his wife Christine have five children together. One of their sons, Peyton, was drafted in the 2017 MLB draft and is set to attend Auburn University on a baseball scholarship. Together they reside in Johns Creek, Georgia where he coaches his sons’ baseball and hockey teams.
