John Croyle
John Croyle, a renowned defensive end at the University of Alabama, set out to make a difference in boys’ lives. After a stellar college football career, he decided it was time to make a change and launch the Big Oak Boys Ranch in the southwestern Louisiana state. Croyle, who played under legendary coach Paul Bryant, now coaches at the ranch. Here are some ways Croyle has inspired his young students.
He was a top-recruiter at Louisiana State University and Florida State University but chose Alabama to be his college and played football with the Crimson Tide. He set many school records and was a finalist in the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. His outstanding play helped Alabama reach 2006 Cotton Bowl Classic where he was named offensive MVP. He has not looked back. The talented quarterback’s career has a long and successful future.
As a defensive tackle, Croyle was a star at Alabama, winning second-team All-SEC honors in 1973 and the Jerry Duncan-I Like to Practice Award in 1972. Croyle met Bryant after his college career. Bryant encouraged Croyle to join the NFL. The two decided to pursue their goal of helping boys in need. They founded the Big Oak Ranch for Boys in 1974. It has grown to three branches, including a girls’ ranch as well as a Christian school.
When he was in his ninth grade, Croyle had made the decision to play football for the University of Alabama. He was a natural athlete, standing 6 feet 3 inches in height. He suffered a serious injury to his knee in his freshman year and was unable to play the entire season. Although Croyle’s height was an advantage, the teammate’s decision to sign with Alabama changed the course of his career. Croyle was a natural athlete who won the Heisman trophy.
Croyle returned to play after sustaining a shoulder injury which kept him out of his junior year. Croyle looked great in his first three games. Then, during a game against Western Carolina he was forced to take a hard tackle. He believes his ranch-based upbringing has helped with injuries. He will always be affected by the injury. That’s a tough pill for him to swallow.
John and Tee Croyle have been giving children who are abused or neglected a second chance for more than 30 years. The ranch is a Christ-centered charity. It is a true reflection God’s heart and a model for acceptance and selflessness. Since over 40 years, the Croyles have been involved with Big Oak Ranch faithfully and they hope to continue this tradition. More than 2,000 children have been impacted by the program. 25 of these children are currently enrolled in college.
Brodie Croyle grew up on the ranch, which is now his childhood home. The former Alabama quarterback grew up on the ranch and still teaches his sons hard work and a respect for animals. His daughter Reagan also played basketball for the Tide and was homecoming queen. Croyle’s children have also become leaders at Big Oak.
