Melania Trump’s coat sparked a Twitter controversy when she wore it at a memorial service for the victims of the September 11 attacks. The coat features a back vent that depicts a plane or skyscraper, and conspiracy theorists questioned whether or not it was a 9/11 tribute. Melania’s office pushed back on these theories by posting a photo of her wearing the coat at a Flight 93 National Memorial.
Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D.N.Y.), recently wore a firefighter jacket to the Capitol. The 9/11 jacket has been worn by Maloney before, during the 2015 impasse over funding for the surviving first responders. In a recent interview with CNN, Maloney said that the jacket “represents fashion with a purpose.”
Since then, the coat has caused quite a stir online. The coat is reminiscent of the plane that crashed into the Twin Towers. A button flap on its back indicates that the coat was worn first lady. Twitter users quickly pointed out that Melania’s coat had the Washington monument stitching at the lower back. The White House isn’t letting trolls ruin this emotional moment, calling the idea ridiculous. It also shows Trump is well aware that his wife is constantly being criticized and scrutinized for her fashion choices.
