Two teens were shot and killed by a man trying to sell them marijuana in February. Donovan Patterson, the alleged shooter was 17 years old at the time he approached the teens and asked them to sell their marijuana. The two victims, one male and one female, were both shot multiple times. Patterson was identified as the gunman. He then ran to the crime scene and shot both victims.

As part of the trial, prosecutors presented evidence proving that Patterson killed Ruffin with a firearm. In his confession, Patterson shared memories of the two victims, including Ruffin’s wedding and plans to marry her. He was also accused of aggravated battery. As part of his defense strategy, Rensch compared Patterson’s trial to the Salem witch trials. Patterson admitted to Ruffin’s murder, but his defense attorney claims he is innocent.
