Haley Reed Choir
Haley Reed was the choir director at Oldham County High School in Buckner, Kentucky, when she was arrested on sexual charges in June 2018. Reed was charged with multiple counts of third-degree rape, sodomy, and unlawful transactions with a minor. She was released on $25,000 bond. Reed reportedly admitted to having sex with the underage student multiple times on school property.
Reed was married when the alleged incidents occurred. While a felony, she was a high school choir director and had been teaching for years. Reed’s case has gained national attention because of the alleged rape and sodomy charges. Reed’s attorney is challenging the gray area in Kentucky law involving minors and consent to sexual contact. One Kentucky law states that if a minor gives consent to a sexual act, it is not a crime.
After the arrest, Reed’s lawyer indicated that Reed and prosecutors were considering a plea deal. At a hearing in February, Reed’s attorney cited the fact that she had attended two events for her children. She was also barred from contact with minors and her family. Reed has also been barred from contacting the victim’s children.
The trial is expected to begin in November. The school is cooperating with the investigation. The trial is expected to take about four days. Oldham County High School is aware of the charges against Reed, and the school is working to protect its students. The school will also continue to work with law enforcement as they determine the truth of the allegations.
