Harlingen
The city of Harlingen, Texas, is in Cameron County and is located in the central Rio Grande Valley, 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The city is home to several universities and is surrounded by beautiful desert landscapes. Its population is approximately 92,000 people and has a very diverse culture.
While visiting Harlingen, you should not miss the town’s historic buildings and museums. The Harlingen Heritage & Arts Museum houses an extensive collection of objects that relate to the history of the city. It features rotating arts and cultural exhibits. The museum’s building used to be the home of the town’s founder, Lon.C. Hill, and was later used as an Air Force base. Another historical site worth visiting in Harlingen is the Iwo Jima Monument, which honors the Marines who fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima. The monument shows six Marines raising the US flag and has a gift shop.
Harlingen is located in extreme southern Texas, near the Rio Grande and is close to many attractions including South Padre Island Beach. The town is also near the border with Mexico. Its roots date back to 1904 when Lon C. Hill purchased large tracts of delta land and created irrigation canals to attract farmers. Hill chose the name Harlingen after a town in the Netherlands. Although the town has expanded in size and population, it still retains a unique character.

The population of Harlingen is about eighty percent Hispanic.
Nearby towns and cities include Corpus Christi, TX, Nuevo Laredo, TX, and San Nicolas De Los Garza, Mexico. The Rio Grande Valley is also a major transportation hub, with two million people traveling through it annually. The Valley International Airport in Harlingen has aligned itself with several carriers to become the air cargo hub of the Rio Grande Valley. It is a hub for shipping and receiving goods, and has close working relationships with DHL and Southwest Airlines Cargo.
The city’s museum scene is also worth exploring, as the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum offers an insight into the history of the Rio Grande Valley. The museum has five buildings, with the main building displaying art and culture exhibits, while the History Museum features historical artifacts. The other three buildings preserve historic structures from the city’s early days. These structures include the home of its founder Lon C. Hill, the first hospital in the area, and the historic Stagecoach Inn.
