Heard Depp v Johnny Depp
The divorce between Heard Depp and Johnny Depp has stirred controversy. The actress wrote an op-ed about domestic abuse and then went on to file a countersuit. The trial ended with a judgement of damages against Mr. Depp, which was later overturned. She also allegedly threatened to fight to keep Johnny.
Heard’s op-ed on domestic abuse
A court of public opinion may have sided with Johnny Depp in the case of Amber Heard and domestic abuse, but she did not write the op-ed. Depp’s legal team called witnesses to prove that Heard had fabricated the domestic abuse claims. The lawyers also tried to prove that Ms. Heard was the primary abuser, stating that she had kicked a bathroom door into his head. However, it’s important to note that “domestic abuse” does not necessarily mean physical violence. It can also include verbal or emotional abuse.
A jury in New York found that Depp defamed Heard in his op-ed, saying his claims were based on false abuse. According to Heard’s legal team, Depp’s claim was based on “false statements.” Adam Waldman, Depp’s former lawyer, described the allegations as “a hoax.” The case was widely covered, and the judge’s decision was a major setback for Depp.
Her trial
Amber Heard testified at Johnny Depp’s trial. She described Johnny Depp as a controlling husband. The jury found in Johnny Depp’s favor, awarding him $15 million. However, they reduced the punitive damages to $350,000. The jury’s decision will now be appealed.
Depp was accused of abusing his girlfriend, but Heard claimed otherwise. She described Depp’s controlling behavior and angry outbursts during the trial. Depp also reportedly refused to let her use complex passwords for her cell phone. She also admitted to drinking and doing coke with Depp.
Her countersuit
A series of lawsuits has plagued the reputation of Johnny Depp, including one by Amber Heard. But, despite the accusations, the actor continued to work in Hollywood. In fact, he was not fired from the film Fantastic Beasts until after he lost the UK case. But Heard’s case is much more difficult to pin down.
The actress filed a countersuit against Depp over the magazine’s libel claims. She accused the magazine of calling Depp a “wife-beater.” But she didn’t stop there. She filed a restraining order against him. Despite the restraining order, Depp’s case has continued to hit setbacks. He was set to go to trial in a separate lawsuit this month over the assault of a film crew member. However, the case was canceled when the actor’s lawyers negotiated a settlement. Additionally, he was ordered to pay the ACLU $38,000 in legal fees related to the defamation suit.
Damages awarded to Mr. Depp
The jury was instructed to focus on the abuse and the legal defamation portion of the lawsuit. Although the article was written with the intention of making the actress look bad, it instead raised policy questions about domestic violence. The movie star’s lawyers pointed to two passages from the article as well as an online headline to support their client’s case. The actor will not be in court to hear the verdict. He recently played onstage in the United Kingdom with Jeff Beck and will be watching the verdict from afar.
A jury found that Heard defamed Depp three times. While Heard’s lawyers denied writing the headline, the jury did not believe most of their testimony, so they found the actress guilty of defamation. The jury awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, the presiding judge capped the Punitive Damages at $350,000 under Virginia law.
She lost despite testimony from family members
Heard attorneys filed a memorandum in court, asking a judge to overturn the jury’s verdict, dismiss the complaint, and order a new trial. They claim that the jury’s verdict was not supported by evidence, and that the op-ed did not have any bearing on Depp’s role in the Pirates franchise.
The court also listened to audio recordings of Depp and Heard teasing one another. The couple repeatedly taunted each other about their film roles, and Heard invited Depp to “suck my dick.” Depp also accused Heard of being a “spoiled fuck brat” for refusing his advances. Heard also denied that she was offered the role of Aquaman, and her attorney used a photo taken on their honeymoon to show Heard’s bruised face. However, Heard testified that the photo was Photoshopped.
Her legal team
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are involved in a legal battle, and the trial is currently going on in Virginia. While it’s unclear if Depp will testify, he has been accused of having an affair with Heard. The actress, 38, is suing Depp for sexual misconduct. Her legal team has shown a photo of Johnny Depp smoking marijuana and holding a cup with the Infinitum Nihil logo.
The libel case involving Depp is going through Virginia courts. A judge ruled in June that Depp had to pay Heard more than $10 million to settle the case. However, Depp’s legal team is hoping to change the judgment.
