Pride Time
Pride time is an annual event in many cities around the world. This is an opportunity to celebrate LGBTQIA+ culture and activism through marches, film festivals, workshops, concerts, and other events. In addition to celebrating the individuality of the LGBTQ community, pride also raises awareness about inequality, and celebrates the lives of LGBTQ people lost to hate crimes and HIV/AIDS.
Although Wakefield High School is considering ending its Pride Time program, students and staff disagree. Some teachers argue that the program should be discontinued. But many students feel that it is necessary. Most teachers have office hours during the same time. Students like Kaitlen Madden, who participates in Future Farmers of America and Drama Club, felt that Pride Time helped them socialize and recover their mental health after a hard day of homework.
Moreover, students who have missed class can utilize the extra time for extra help. They may also use this time to make up tests that they did not take on their regular days. However, students who have other extracurricular activities may not be able to take extra help during the Pride Time program. Without the help of Pride Time, these students could end up losing grades.
In San Francisco, the LGBTQ community turns on the charm extra loud during Pride time. The Pride parade is one of the city’s most popular events, and often has a large number of corporate sponsors. During Pride time, the Castro/Mission districts turn into one huge street party. A Pride weekend includes a parade on June 26 and a Pride festival, which goes on throughout the weekend.
Pride month is an important time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate their history. The events and activities held throughout the month of June honor the organizers of the queer rights movement, who were largely Black and transgender. Without their efforts, we would not be where we are today. Therefore, attending Pride time is important and should be done responsibly.
The Stonewall Riots occurred on June 26, 1969 and galvanized the gay rights movement in the United States. Since then, June has been associated with Pride.
