Rickey Henley was born on December 25, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois to John Henley who left when he was two. At age six, Rickey moved with his mother to Oakland, California and began playing baseball professionally; though highly talented athletically, he turned down many football scholarships before ultimately opting to pursue baseball professionally.

He began his professional career with the Oakland Athletics in 1976 and quickly made a name for himself on the team. In 1981, he won the Golden Glove Award for his defensive abilities and set an American League record with 118 stolen bases. Additionally, he was part of Oakland’s 1980 World Series-winning squad and led their stolen base totals both seasons of 1982 and 1983.

In 1984, he signed with the New York Yankees and went on to lead their team in stolen bases (1985 and 1988), along with hitting 24 home runs during his four-year tenure with them.

While with the Yankees, he broke Lou Brock’s record for most stolen bases in a season with 93 swipes during his final year on the team. He concluded his MLB career in 2003 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
