The Whitney Piano & Supply Company was founded in 1890 in Chicago, Illinois. Its founders were Frank H. Whitney and Arthur E. Whitney. The company became incorporated in 1895, and continued to build pianos under the Whitney brand name for the next century and a half. The Kimball Piano Company closed its doors in 1996, but Whitney Piano & Supply Company continued to build pianos under the Whitney name.

In the late 1800s, the W. P. Haines Piano Company opened its doors on Walton Avenue in New York City. This company, which is not to be confused with Haines Brothers, began building upright pianos. It was known for its quality and made pianos that were popular for decades. The brand name was eventually taken over by the Winter Piano Company of New York. In 1950, the company ceased building pianos under the Haines name, and the company went on to produce pianos under the Hallet Davis & Co. brand. It was re-introduced to the market in the 1990s, and today, many of the company’s pianos are manufactured in the Dong Bei Piano Group factory in Lionin province of China.
