Hoyeon Jung Cultural Appropriation
It’s no secret that Korean actors and actresses have embraced American pop culture. But the question of whether or not this practice constitutes cultural appropriation is still unanswered. Jung, who is best known for her role in the hit k-drama Reply 1988, has also starred in films such as The Handmaiden (2016) and Extreme Job (2019). In addition to acting, Jung has also debuted as a R&B singer earlier this year, as part of the group MSG Wannabe.
Jung is a popular face on social media. She has appeared on the cover of several magazines and websites and has recently landed deals with Louis Vuitton and Adidas. She has also walked for many major brands, including Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Alberta Ferretti. Her work as a model has also earned her a plethora of accolades, including the title of Vogue Korea’s Next Top Model.
Jennie also appeared in Squid Game’s end credits, and the two have become close friends. According to a recent interview with Lee Jung-jae, Jennie once visited the Squid Game set and sent a food truck to offer support. It’s a customary gesture for celebrity friends and fans in Korea. They also share many pictures online and recently attended a Blackpink concert.
However, despite the widespread misunderstanding about cultural appropriation in K-pop, the issue has not gone away. In fact, it’s even become a source of ire for Korean singers. In response to this, Korean idols have begun to publicly apologize for their actions.
