After graduating college, he took various small roles in film and TV before landing his first major role in Sidney Lumet’s Serpico in 1974. That same year he was cast as Neil Simon’s Chapter Two lead, while continuing to act in theater productions and commercials (such as for Dr Pepper, Listerine, and JC Penney).

Hirsch made his breakthrough as the main character on Taxi during its five-year run from 1977 – 1981, appearing 114 episodes and winning two Emmy awards during that time. Additionally, he went on to star in other popular television series such as Dear John on NBC and Numb3rs before eventually calling it quits from acting altogether in 2023.

Hirsch currently resides in Denning in Ulster County, New York, where he has his home. He is married to fashion designer Bonni Sue Chalkin and has one daughter named Montana; in addition to this relationship there have been multiple others with other women.
