Makayla Smith was also shot, but she survived.
Lauren Landavazo, a middle school student from Wichita Falls, was a well-known name. Makayla Smith was a close friend and she had her own horse. The horse was stolen and found in pieces in Clay County. Lauren Landavazo’s horse was designed by Bethany Tolley. The Landavazo family was devastated by Lauren’s death and are determined to bring justice for her killer.
Kody Lott was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault using a deadly weapon and life imprisonment for first-degree murder. Lauren’s parents feel that Lott’s sentence is too harsh, and they are now trying to get the state to pass a new law to honor Lauren. The legislation is named “Lauren’s Law.”
Makayla Landavazo and Lauren’s parents were also in the area at the time of the shooting. The teenager was hit fourteen times and only one bullet struck her. Lauren was stable. Her mother and sister ran to her side, and neighbors rushed to help her. Police have released a photo of the suspect and a description. After the shooting, the murderer fled the scene. The incident happened on Thursday night, and the family of the victim’s boyfriend have yet to publicly address their relationship.
Lott, who was found guilty of the murder of Lauren Landavazo in 2016, admitted to the crime after being arrested. Lott will now be sentenced to life imprisonment. It is important to remember that Lott has a history of mental illness and is therefore incompetent for trial. That doesn’t mean that he’s not guilty – it’s just the opposite.
Lott was charged with murder, aggravated attack, and possessing a prohibited weapon. He is also facing three counts of child pornography possession. The alleged shooter had a semi-automatic rifle, and he pulled up to the scene of the crime. While Smith and Landavazo were walking home from school, he allegedly opened fire on them. Afterwards, he tried to hide the rifle and drove away.
