Monte Colburn’s father, Gregory, worked in the casino business. His mother, Patricia Laughton is from Amador County, and his father Gregory is from the North Shore. Monte lived in Brockway, California as a child. He later purchased a home there with his wife. His father also owned a business in San Jose, California. He served as the California State President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He began fishing in 1987, and was soon hired by Captain Keith to fish with him. Monte was a deckhand for many years and earned his Coast Guard Mate’s license. He eventually upgraded his license to captain’s in 1995. While working on the Wizard, Monte also commanded other crab boats and gained valuable captain’s experience. He was a deckhand on Wizard and also served as Keith Colburn’s assistant captain.
He is Keith Colburn’s brother and works on F/V Wizard. Although the two brothers have fought on camera, things usually work out. Monte’s father passed away last year, and Keith has suffered from several health scares. During this time, Monte helped Keith with his fishing schedule. Their relationship on the boat continues to this day, as they both continue to work on the show. The series is entering its sixteenth year.
Keith Colburn fired Monte Colburn from his Deadliest Catch job, but later rehired him and reassured fans that the fishing career is still his. Monte is married and lives in North Lake Tahoe. His brothers have had numerous fights over the years. The details of the fight are still unknown. Monte is still trying to prove himself worthy of the captain’s post. And in addition to that, Monte Colburn is a devoted husband and father.
Monte and his crew board the Wizard when the tide turns south. Monte instructs his crew to stack the boat over the intercom. Monte is eager to return to civilization. But the weather is getting worse and the swells keep growing. They are on the edge of a collision course with a much larger vessel, so Monte and his crew are on the verge of disaster. The Wizard’s crew and its captain are trying find a way to save the boat, which is being sunk by a large trawler.
The first year of Monte Colburn’s life as a captain of north crabs was filled with adventure. The season lasted 10 months, and he earned his master’s and mate’s licenses. He also served as a relief captain with his brother Keith. In 2005, Monte appeared in the Deadliest Catch documentary series, which chronicles life aboard a fishing vessel. It aired on the Discovery channel. He is well-known for his acting and has been involved with many projects.
Colburn owns the small crabbing vessel The Wizard. The Wizard was built in 1987. He was hired as a deckhand in 1988 and promoted to Skipper in 1990. He worked for three years on the Wizard before he purchased the Sirene. He continued to operate the Wizard after purchasing the crabber, but the government had to reduce the fleet size by 50%. Despite these changes, the Wizard is still in operation today.
