Martin David Robinson, better known by his stage name Marty Robbins, was an American singer-composer, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and racing driver who became well-known during the 1950s as one of the premier country and Western singers during that era. Additionally, many of his songs also became hit pop songs during this period.
Robbins was born in Glendale, Arizona. At 12, his parents divorced, leaving him to tend goats and break wild horses in the Bradshaw Mountains outside Phoenix before eventually joining the U.S. Navy during World War II – serving in the Pacific theatre before returning home and singing until discovered by Grand Ole Opry star Little Jimmy Dickens in Phoenix who suggested moving him to Nashville and join their Opry; that recommendation led to Robbins recording career starting soon thereafter in 1953.
“El Paso,” which earned a Grammy Award and became his signature Western ballad, set the tone for his entire career as it rose to the top of both country and pop charts simultaneously.
Robbins was also an accomplished race car driver, competing in 35 NASCAR races and placing in the top ten six times. Unfortunately, this conflicted with his career as a musician, so instead he focused on singing as his primary passion.
Robbins continued recording albums and touring after retiring from racing, as well as suffering health problems that eventually led to his heart attack on December 8, 1982 at age 57. Following this event he was honored with induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
In 2018, a stretch of Glendale Avenue was named in his honor and his son Ronny attended the dedication ceremony as part of the crowd. “I know my daddy would be overjoyed!” Ronny declared at this special momentous occasion.
